Shibuya in Tokyo is known for its vibrant atmosphere, youth culture, and an active nightlife. However, this popular tourist destination is also taking steps to become more environmentally friendly. One such initiative is a new test of the Megloo service, which will provide takeout and delivery in multi-use packaging to eateries in the area around the Shibuya Cast building near Shibuya Station.
The Megloo service is operated by Kaman Co., Ltd. Kaman will be working with food truck operator Workstore Tokyo Do and delivery service Wolt Japan to test the use of multi-use packaging for takeout and delivery from 19 restaurants and 5 food trucks in the Shibuya area from January 24th to February 23rd, 2023.

The Megloo cycle (clockwise from top left): Customers who order from participating eateries receive their food in Megloo multi-use packaging. They enjoy their meal, lightly rinse the packaging, then deposit it into a Megloo return box. Megloo collects the containers, and returns them to participating eateries, who wash them thoroughly and use them again.

Kaman hopes to build a system that will make it easy for customers to return used containers to participating restaurants and food trucks so that they can be used again. Through this trial, Kaman aims to further expand the number of participating establishments and make the reusable container infrastructure more widely available throughout Shibuya Ward.
Moreover, since awareness of environmental issues is rising among Japanese businesses and consumers, this initiative may continue beyond this trial.
