Pigmentation can be a tricky skin concern to treat, but if there’s one person we trust to give it a darn good go, it’s skincare guru Caroline Hirons. As well as an excellent new book on teen skin, Caroline also founded the skincare brand Skin Rocks, and its newest product is The Hyperpigmentation Serum – and it has delivered some of the most impressive before-and-after results on dark spots we’ve ever seen.
The Hyperpigmentation Serum, £85 and £75 for refills, contains a blend of effective, scientific ingredients as you’d expect from the no-nonsense Queen of Skin to help to fade dark marks, red marks, sun spots and melasma. It’s clinically proven to reduce the appearance of dark marks and sun spots by up to 17% after four weeks, and by up to 24% after eight weeks, as well as reducing red marks and evening the skin tone. It’s the tester before-and-after photos, however, that left us really gobsmacked.

The image at the top of the page shows one tester’s skin before and after using this Skin Rocks serum for 12 weeks, with their facial pigmentation noticeably diminished.
Over on the Skin Rocks Instagram account, there’s also another jaw-dropping transformation of a woman named Michelle, who had a combination of hypopigmentation (a loss of pigment in the skin) and hyperpigmentation. These are her results after eight weeks of using this serum – a huge reduction in her pigmentation issues, and some of the best we’ve ever seen from a topical product.
Down in the comments section, Michelle gave her thoughts on this product: “My skin was instantly more radiant and brighter after the first use. After a few weeks of using it I noticed my skin cell turnover had increased, helping with hormonal spots. My skin looks more even, smoother and healthier. Most of all the results I achieved from using the serum for just 8 weeks, has given me the confidence to be able to leave the house without make-up on. Something I haven’t done for many years. I highly recommend this product.”

Another early testers wrote: “I’ve struggled with hyperpigmentation for over 20 years, and I can honestly say this is the first product that has made a visible difference. Around the 4-week mark, I started to notice the pigmentation fading—and by the end of the 8-week trial, the improvement was undeniable. My skin looked clearer, brighter, and felt significantly softer.”
“In 8 weeks my pigmentation patches were reduced and the overall texture of skin was smoother, brighter with pores minimised,” a third person agreed. “I have had so many compliments on my skin and can’t for the release date so I can start using it again. I am excited to see what 6 months can do!”
The Hyperpigmentation Serum sold out on the Skin Rocks website shortly after launching; we’re told there’ll be a restock soon, but in the meantime you can also buy it from Space NK.
Of course, it’s not the cheapest product on the market, however we do believe you get what you pay for with a brand like Skin Rocks.
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to try, there’s Glow-C Tranexamic 5% Serum, £27, from Facetheory, another skincare brand that posts a lot of before and after imagery.
Paula’s Choice is another brand created by a skincare expert – Paula Begoun – and its Discoloration Repair Serum is now reduced from £52 to £41.60.
