Tommy Fury confesses ‘I would have walked away’ in rare comment about Molly-Mae split

Tommy Fury has opened up about his relationship with Molly-Mae Hague and the reasons behind their split last year, as he prepares to share more of his life in a new BBC show

Tommy Fury has admitted he would have walked away from himself too following his split from Molly-Mae Hague last year.

The pair triumphed on Love Island in 2019 and subsequently became one of the most successful couples from the ITV dating show, welcoming daughter Bambi in 2023 and becoming engaged months afterwards.

Nevertheless, they stunned supporters in August last year when they revealed their five-year romance had ended.

Initially, they chose not to reveal further details regarding the cause of their break-up, though it subsequently came to light that Tommy’s relationship with alcohol had contributed.

He’s now speaking candidly about his battles in a fresh BBC documentary series, following Molly-Mae’s Amazon Prime show in which she emotionally discussed how Tommy’s drinking had “damaged” their shared life, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury. will reveal his journey as a boxer whilst he prepares to prove himself in the ring, and provide a more intimate glimpse into his role as a father and his battles with alcohol.

Prior to the series launching, Tommy spoke openly about alcohol’s recent impact on his life and his relationship with Molly-Mae, with whom he appears to have since reignited his romance as they navigate their relationship difficulties.

During one moment in the series, his father John disclosed he advised Molly-Mae to “walk away” from the relationship, with Tommy subsequently telling journalists he would have offered identical advice.

Reflecting on his father’s words, he confessed: “What can I say? I probably would have walked away from me too. It was at that stage and it was a tough moment in my life.

“Everything happens for a reason, I’m not happy that I went through that but I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and I don’t think I’d know half of what I know about myself if I never went through that.

“To go through that on a personal level is one thing, but to go through that in front of the whole world and while being looked at under a microscope and everyone’s looking at exactly what you’re doing in depth… I’m doing this in front of the whole world, it adds a new pressure but I’ve definitely learned things about myself that I would never have found out. So I’m grateful for the life lessons that I’ve learned.”

Reflecting on the darkest period of his life, Tommy admitted he doesn’t “recognise” the man he was then, and now views his relationship with alcohol differently.

“Drinking is not on my mind, I had enough drink to last me a lifetime in 2024,” he stated.

“Going forward, if it’s a wedding or something like that I might have a couple of drinks but from where I’ve come from and where I’ve been, there’s drinking and then there’s drinking.

“Drinking four or five times a week is something nobody should be doing, when I look at that person from back then, I don’t recognise that guy, it’s just not me. Back then, I didn’t really care about anything, I was letting the world go by, I wasn’t bothered and that’s just not me.

“I’ve always kept myself in tip top condition, I’m an athlete, I’m a fighter, I want to strive for the best, that’s my mindset.

“And then I lost it down that stretch, so it’s looking at a different person, but now I’m able to go to an occasion and be normal and that’s the best feeling I can have, especially from where I’ve come from with my relationship with alcohol.

“I can be around it, have a couple of drinks and be normal, whereas before, that was never in sight.”

After overcoming his battles, Tommy now hopes his documentary series will assist others facing similar challenges.

His turning point to alcohol came after a surgery on his hand in January last year following a year-long injury which left him in pain and unable to move properly.

He revealed: “I was in pain with it a lot of times, and then suddenly, you find that one day all you can do is sit down and a few drinks take the pain away. You forget where you are and what’s going on, and sometimes you want that feeling all the time and that’s where it starts.

“You see the highs and lows and everything I’ve gone through in this documentary, it’s going to be so nice to let people in and see that, because you should never bottle anything up, and I’m guilty of doing that, but now I’ve gone really in the deep end and let all the cameras in, and I take you through that low and through those moments, and if I can just help one person, or if I can help thousands of people, that’s great.”

Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury airs Tuesday, August 19 at 9pm on BBC Three and will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
