A monorail train in Mumbai faced a technical snag on Tuesday evening as the city faced heavy rains, leading to waterlogging in several areas. According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the monorail train near Mysore Colony station experienced a “minor power supply issue”. 

ANI reported, citing Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), that all passengers of the Monorail train (RST-4) stalled between Bhakti Park and Chembur, near Mysore Colony station in Mumbai, have been safely rescued. 

“Our operations and maintenance teams are already on-site and working to resolve it quickly,” MMRDA said in a post on X earlier. 

“For now, services between Wadala and Chembur are running smoothly on a single line. We sincerely thank you for your patience and assure you that your safety remains our top priority,” it added.

Teams of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire department, and the police were engaged in evacuating passengers.

Meanwhile, according to IANS, commuters faced inconvenience as local train services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) towards Kalyan were halted. 

Speaking to ANI, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ekanth Shinde, said, “Due to the closure of Harbour Line, several passengers started travelling in the Monorail. This led to overcrowding in the train, and a power breakdown occurred. Due to the power breakdown, emergency brakes were applied and the train stopped. Our priority is to rescue passengers from the train.”

“I spoke with the Municipal Commissioner. Officials of MMRDA, BMC, Fire Brigade and police are present at the spot. I also spoke with some of the passengers. The rescue operation will be finished in a while now. Medical teams are present at the spot. The passengers will soon reach their homes safely. We will ensure that this incident is not repeated,” he added.

CM Fadnavis On Mumbai Rains

Amid heavy rainfall in several parts of the state, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday informed that Mumbai has received around 300 mm of rain, leading to some disruptions.

The city received 300mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours from 8 am on August 18 to 8 am on August 19. The chief minister said that SDRF and NDRF teams have been deployed where needed.

A red alert remains in place for the Konkan and Ghat regions for the next few hours, and an orange alert has also been issued for some areas.

Mumbai Local Delayed

ANI reported on Monday that Mumbai’s heavy rainfall has led to delays in local trains due to decreased visibility and waterlogging at some places.

Both the Mainline and the Harbourline are delayed by nearly 10 to 15 minutes. The administration is on high alert, and all necessary precautions are being taken to avoid any mishap in heavy rain.

Govt Offices, Schools, Colleges Shut

As per IANS, as the intensity of rain increased, all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai were closed on Tuesday. Private offices and establishments have been asked to instruct their employees to work from home (WFH). Further, the Mumbai Police have also appealed to the citizens to take care and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, in a post on X, said, “Good Morning Mumbai. Hope you are adhering to the safety guidelines in wake of the heavy showers expected today. Please take care, step out only if necessary, prevent going near the shore during high tide and don’t forget, you will find us around the corner for help, in case of any emergency. Requesting the private sector to enable work from home as much as possible.”

Mumbai has been receiving heavy rain since Monday. The intensity of the rain has increased even more this morning. The weather department has issued a red alert in Mumbai, Thane, and some districts of the Konkan region.
