Fun With Kids: United Buddy Bears exhibit, Snoopy musical, Malay choral recitation contest Katapella

SINGAPORE – Make family time all the more special with these ideas and activities.

Marvel at 150 life-size bear sculptures with your kids at Gardens by the Bay’s Supertree Grove Lawn. Explain to them that these are not just playful figures, but they also carry a profound message.

Known as the United Buddy Bears, they advocate for a peaceful world, having journeyed through 36 countries, including the United States, France, Finland, Egypt, Japan and India, before arriving in Singapore.

Among them are 145 2m-tall fibreglass bears, each representing a country and designed by an artist from that nation to reflect its culture, heritage and creativity.

The Buddy Bears concept was conceived by German couple Klaus and Eva Herlitz, who envisioned art as a universal language for promoting peace, tolerance and international understanding. Bears are also the heraldic animal of Berlin, Germany’s capital.

First exhibited in Berlin in 2002, this global touring exhibition makes its Singapore debut through a collaboration between Gardens by the Bay and the Embassy of Germany in Singapore.

In this special edition, Singapore’s bear is positioned alongside Germany’s bear to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Singapore bear, adorned with orchid, henna and lotus motifs on a red backdrop, embodies the nation’s multicultural heritage. It is the winning design by then Raffles Design Institute student Jacqueline Harliman in a 2010 competition organised by Singapore Tourism Board.

There are also five special bears that symbolise important values and principles, such as human rights and respect for all life.

The free exhibition is on until Oct 12.

Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are back with their first animated musical in 37 years. The 40-minute animated show, which is available on Apple TV+, features six original songs.

The story follows Sally as she nervously embarks on her first summer camp experience. Meanwhile, her brother Charlie, in his final year, is determined to make the most of his last camp.

When he discovers the camp is slated for permanent closure due to declining attendance, he resolves to save it, unwilling to lose a place that holds such significance for him and his friends.

The animated musical’s release also coincides with the comic strip’s 75th anniversary in 2025.

In the show, Charlie sings When We Were Light, reflecting on himself as a younger boy and Snoopy as a puppy.

This part features vintage Peanuts art, using original depictions of the characters from the 1950s by late creator Charles Schulz.
