The ability to maintain critical services even during maintenance, robustness against failures, and a high degree of availability: these are the requirements that define the international Tier III Facility certification, one of the most demanding in the world for data centers. Now, Serpro’s data center in the Brasília region officially joins this select group. The seal granted by the Uptime Institute highlights the state-owned company’s commitment to digital sovereignty and excellence in delivering strategic services to the Brazilian government.
For Serpro’s Director of Operations, Wilton Mota, the certification process was conducted with excellence by the state-owned company’s entire technical team. “This recognition reaffirms our commitment to the sovereignty and security of the country’s data. We have taken another solid step toward consolidating a reliable and strategic infrastructure for the Brazilian state,” he emphasized.
According to Thiago Oliveira, Serpro’s Data Center Superintendent, the Tier III certification places the state-owned company among a group of globally recognized technology providers. “This certification adds an additional layer of trust to digital government operations, demonstrating that the services provided to society are supported by internationally audited and validated practices,” he explains.
Meticulous testing
The certification is the result of a long-term plan, initiated in 2020, which mobilized several teams and overcame significant challenges, as noted by Régison Martins, Innovation Manager at the Data Center Superintendence. “This achievement symbolizes overcoming a complex journey that included significant challenges along the way. More than overcoming obstacles, we demonstrated the strength of a team committed to strategic results,” he stated.
The journey was marked by meticulous testing of energy systems, air conditioning, automation, and electrical installations, as well as several technical interventions performed while the data center was fully operational. “Executing a project of this magnitude in an operational environment required detailed risk analysis and meticulously coordinated actions. The certification’s success reflects the precise planning and tireless dedication of everyone involved,” said Guilherme Gonçalves, lead engineer for the project at Serpro.
With approximately 1,670 m² of rack space and 1.1 MegaWatts of IT power capacity, the Brasília Data Center now guarantees full conditions for maintenance without service interruption. This means greater predictability and security for the company’s customers, in line with the commitments made in service level agreements (SLAs) and Serpro’s strategic objectives.
Continuous modernization and new advances
Earning Tier III Facility certification doesn’t end the cycle of improvements. The Brasília Regional data center has already begun a new process of modernizing its HVAC infrastructure, focusing on energy efficiency and the adoption of more sustainable and intelligent technologies. The initiative includes replacing old machines with state-of-the-art equipment, automating systems using AI, and introducing solutions such as Liquid Cooling and Free Cooling, aligned with best sustainability practices.
Additionally, the unit will begin the process to obtain Tier III Operational Sustainability certification, also granted by the Uptime Institute. Unlike infrastructure certification, this new stage assesses operational, management, and maintenance practices, focusing on maximizing the availability and longevity of data center assets. This is another important step toward ensuring that technical excellence is accompanied by equally mature and reliable operations.
