
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday emphasized that the partnership between India and Japan, two of the world’s largest economies and democracies, is vital not only for their own nations but also for global peace and security.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that both countries have now laid the foundation for a new and golden chapter in their special strategic and global partnership, centered on investment, innovation, economic security, environment, technology, health, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges, and have mapped out a vision for the next decade.
“Our discussions today were productive as well as purposeful. We agree that as the two largest economies of the world and living democracies, our partnership is essential not just for the two countries but also for global peace and security. Strong democracies are natural partners in shaping a better world. Today, we have laid the foundation of a new and golden chapter in our special strategic and global partnership. We have charted a roadmap for the next decade. In the center of our vision lie investment, innovation, economic security, environment, technology, health, mobility, people-to-people exchanges,” he said.

Green Energy and Joint Crediting Mechanism
Highlighting sustainability as a pillar of the partnership, Prime Minister Modi praised the launch of the joint credit mechanism for energy, calling it “a major victory” that shows that the green partnership is as strong as the economic partnership.
“Our Joint Crediting Mechanism for energy is a major victory. It shows that our green partnership is as strong as our economic partnership. In this direction, we are also beginning the sustainable fuels initiatives and battery supply chain partnership. We are launching the economic security cooperation initiative. Under this, we will go ahead in critical and strategic sectors, with an extensive approach,” he said.
Digital Partnership 2.0, AI Cooperation Initiative, Semiconductors And Rare Earth Minerals
Emphasizing that cooperation in the high-technology sector is a priority for both India and Japan, Prime Minister Modi said that Digital Partnership 2.0 and the AI Cooperation Initiative are being advanced, with a particular focus on semiconductors and rare earth minerals.
“Cooperation in the high technology sector is a priority for both of us. In this regard, Digital Partnership 2.0 and AI Cooperation Initiative are being taken up. Semiconductors and rare earth minerals will be at the top of our agenda,” he said.
Winning Combination: Japanese Tech and Indian Talent
Emphasizing that Japanese technology and Indian talent are a winning combination, Prime Minister Modi said that while work is underway on high-speed rail, the next-generation mobility partnership will also drive rapid progress in sectors such as ports, aviation, and shipbuilding.
“We believe that Japanese technology and Indian talent are a winning combination. Where we are working on high-speed rail, under next-generation mobility partnership we will also make rapid progress in sectors like ports, aviation and ship-building,” he said.
ISRO–JAXA Collaboration on Chandrayaan-5 Mission
Welcoming the agreement between Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for cooperation on the Chandrayaan-5 Mission, Prime Minister Modi said that joint initiatives by the two nations would transcend the boundaries of Earth and become a symbol of humanity’s progress in space
“For cooperation in Chandrayaan 5 Mission, we welcome the agreement between ISRO and JAXA. Our active cooperation will cross the boundaries of the earth and become a symbol of humanity’s progress in space,” he said.
Japan’s 10 Trillion Yen Investment in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Japan plans to invest 10 trillion yen in India over the next 10 years. The focus will be on connecting small and medium businesses and startups from both countries to encourage cooperation and growth.
“We have set a goal of investment of 10 Trillion Yen from Japan in India in the next 10 years. Special emphasis will be laid on connecting India’s and Japan’s small and medium enterprises and startups,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Japan for a two-day official visit from August 29 to 30 to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. Following this, he will travel to China to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Tianjin.
