Charlie McConalogue says he wants the North West to become a region that embraces digital innovation and the potential of Artificial Intelligence.
McConalogue, the Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy, made the commetns at the Asia Matters North West Business Summit in the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny earlier this week.
Artificial Intelligence Large Language Models such as Chat GPT have been linked with creating potential mental health issues for users, as well as spreading misinformation and copywrited materials.
However, Minister McConalogue says that new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence should be embraced by businesses and learning institutions such as Donegal ATU in the North West.
“In the past, the North West economy was heavily dependent on primary production, with traditional manufacturing, agriculture and fishing very much to the fore. Today, the North West region is positioned to take its place in a future that will be built on the potential of new technologies including the potential for new job opportunities offered by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence across all business sectors and society. Donegal ATU is leading the way when it comes to AI, innovation, education and research. Through initiatives like DICE Labs and partnerships with global tech leaders, Donegal ATU is carving out a key role in AI’s development and application across various sectors,” he said.

The Minister of State said that creating trade links with Asia has become a top priority in Ireland’s economic diversification.
“As Ireland accelerates global trade diversification, Asia is the top priority. For Ireland, a small open European economy, building trusted and mutually beneficial partnerships with Asia is critical when it comes to diversifying trade, attracting investment, and enabling SMEs to thrive globally.”

The Irish Government has appointed a Minister, my colleague Niamh Smyth, with specific responsibility for AI and digital transformation as Ireland seeks to accelerate adoption of these rapidly evolving technologies so critical to driving the competitiveness of Irish businesses in international markets. The formation of the AI Advisory Council to provide independent expert advice to government on artificial intelligence policy is proof of the government’s commitment to harness AI for economic growth.”
“There are a lot of fears and concerns about the impact of AI on business, from employment, data protection and regulatory perspectives – the Irish government has designated 15 national competent authorities for oversight and enforcement of the EU AI ACT in Ireland. I see great potential for Ireland becoming a global AI hub given the fact we are the European home to many of the biggest technology companies in the world and the infrastructure and talent that surrounds it.”
