Funeral details have been announced for the man who died after a suspected one punch attack in Co Kildare last week.

Ryan Weir Gibbons, whose death is now being treated as a murder, is to be cremated after requiem mass in Kildare Town on Friday morning. Mr Weir Gibbons, who was 29, died on Thursday evening, after he was assaulted in the centre of Kildare Town in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardai upgraded the investigation into his death to a murder investigation after a post mortem was carried out on Friday morning. Sources have told us he was assaulted in the town’s McGee Terrace after he had a disagreement with a number of young people on a bus to Kildare earlier in the night.

He then came across the same group as he walked home – and was attacked. It’s understood he suffered a one punch attack – and sustained fatal head injuries after he fell to the ground.

Medics at Naas General Hospital fought to save him, but he lost his fight for life on Thursday. Mr Weir Gibbons’ death notice says he was living at Connagh Green in Kildare Town, but was originally from Mulhuddart.

It says: “Peacefully, 30th October 2025, in the wonderful care of the staff at ICU, Naas Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Pre-deceased by his sister Katie and his grandparents Edward and Sally. Ryan will be sadly missed by his loving parents Elaine and Edward, brother Andrew and his partner Habiba, sister Nicole and her partner Jordan, nieces Lottie and Sadie, grandparents John and Betty, aunts, uncles, extended family, neighbours and his many friends.”

The death notice says his requiem mass will take place in Kildare Town on Friday morning before a cremation service in south Dublin. It says: “Reposing at McWeys Funeral Home, Abbeyview, Kildare Town from 2pm on Thursday (6th November) concluding with Prayers at 7pm. Removal by Glennons Funeral Directors on Friday morning to arrive at St. Brigids Parish Church, Kildare Town for Requiem Mass at 11am.

“Cremation service afterwards in Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harold’s Cross at 1:45pm.” Numerous friends paid tribute to Mr Weir Gibbons, who was known as Gibby, online on Friday.

One said: One man said: “RIP Ryan Gibbons, a great guy, had the opportunity to be in the same school as him, always had good laughs on him, friendly to all, and would never do no harm to no one. Hope the justice now does its job to punish those to (who) did that to him. My condolences to the family and all friends close to him.”

And a woman said: “R.I.P gibby, such devastating news about such a lovely lad who was never seen without a smile on his face, such a kind soul. There’s a dark cloud over Kildare today thinking of all your friends and family at this horrible time, rest easy gibby.”

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They said: “Gardaí continue to investigate a serious assault that occurred in Kildare town in the early hours of Sunday, 26th October 2025. The man, aged in his 20s, who was found unresponsive on McGee Terrace at approximately 3:15am, has passed away in hospital.

“A post-mortem examination has been carried out, the results of which will not be released for operational reasons. Following the post-mortem examination, An Garda Síochána has now commenced a murder investigation.

“Gardaí are continuing to appeal to anyone with information in relation to this incident. Any road users who were in the area between 2:00am and 4:00am and who may have video footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527730, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
