12 criminals locked up in Leeds this month – from train ticket scammers to evil predators

It’s been another busy month at the courts across Leeds

As the months roll on, so do the wheels of justice across Leeds as more criminals enter the court docks. Some leave the court the same way they came in – through the security doors – but others are taken away in a van to begin their time behind bars.

October has been another busy month, with some of the region’s most dangerous criminals locked up at the courts in Leeds. This month saw the sentences of Harehills rioting teenager Alex Tiuga, who was said to play an “instrumental role” in the disorder last year, and evil rapist chef Niall Johnson who repeatedly attacked a teenage girl, despite her telling him “no.”

Below are the criminals and their crimes which they were put behind bars in October.

He had been in a relationship with a woman, but it broke down due to him cheating, but he continued to contact her from 2019. The woman did not report it initially as the contact had been on social media but when she got a new partner, Maynard-Williams began to threaten him and stalk the woman in person.

Maynard-Williams then targeted the woman on LinkedIn, commenting on a picture of her hiking that said: “I just like looking at you and seeing your face” and “I’m so so happy and my heart feels so seeing you so happy, I love you young lady.” In another incident he left a scarf tied to the shed at her mum’s home and later turned up carrying a Galaxy chocolate bar, a piece of paper and a wine bottle. Evil predators Scott and Egberongbe preyed on young girls and offered them lifts, alcohol, drugs and cash to abuse them.

They were jailed for a total of 17 years after being found guilty of a catalogue of abuse. The convictions follow a lengthy investigation by West Yorkshire Police’s Leeds District Safeguarding Unit which was launched in August 2021 after one of the victims spoke to a family member about the offences against her and another girl. Egberongbe was arrested the same day, with Scott arrested a month later.

A third victim came forward in January 2022 to report she had been sexually assaulted by Scott prior to his arrest.

University students Liu and Yu pulled off a £140,000 train ticket scam by cashing in twice on delayed journeys. The “exploited a loophole” in the refund system to make a small fortune while living in a student flat in Leeds.

Under the national ‘Delay Repay’ scheme, passengers can claim compensation when a train arrives late. But Lu and Yiu discovered there were no automatic cross-checks to find out whether a customer had already had their ticket refunded – a flaw that proved key to their con.

The pair would first claim refunds for train tickets – pretending they no longer wanted to travel – then pocket extra cash by applying for Delay Repay compensation on the same journeys if the trains ran late, Leeds Crown Court heard.

When British Transport Police finally arrested them, it was found that Liu had illegally acquired £141,031, while Yu had received £15,712. The duo, who were both held on remand since their arrest, admitted charges of conspiracy to defraud and possession of criminal property.

The court heard they had multiple bank accounts and had created 16 fictitious people to help conceal their fraud while living as flatmates.

They also used a 20-SIM card adapter in a single phone so they could closely monitor their scam and make it appear contact was from different phones and people.

Liu was jailed for 30 months and Yu for 17 weeks.

Niall JohnsonNiall Johnson(Image: West Yorkshire Police)

Rapist chef Johnson continually attacked a teenage girl while she told him “no.”

He was 18 when he raped the 16-year-old girl at his home. She had stayed there after the pair chatted over social media, and although there were said to be “no difficulties” at first, after a number of days his behaviour “changed” when he touched and kissed her.

A judge told Johnson: “She told you to stop and you just told her to ‘lie back and enjoy it.'”

He went on to rape the girl twice, and each time she repeatedly told him to stop.

Johnson was jailed for eight years and six months.
