A critical product recall has been announced for two festive favourites after safety inspections revealed they could present a significant health hazard to certain shoppers.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is urging anyone who bought these products to cease consumption without delay.

The recall impacts several batches of Le Paysan Smoked Salmon Pate and Le Paysan Smoked Mackerel Pate, available across various Irish shops, including SuperValu, where they’re priced at €5.50 and €4.75 respectively.

Safety officials have identified undeclared sulphur dioxide and improperly labelled milk in particular batches, presenting a potential danger to those with sensitivities.

The timing couldn’t be more unfortunate, coming mere days ahead of Christmas, with these pates being firm favourites for festive gatherings, typically enjoyed on crackers, toast or as part of a seasonal sharing platter.

According to the FSAI: “The below batches of Le Paysan Smoked Salmon Pate and Le Paysan Smoked Mackerel Pate contain sulphur dioxide, which is not declared in the list of ingredients. Milk is also not emphasised in the ingredients list. This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sulphur dioxide and/or milk, and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batches. The affected batches are being recalled.”

Customers who have bought any of these batches and have an allergy or intolerance to sulphur dioxide or milk are urged to return them to their nearest SuperValu outlet for a full refund.

Another urgent recall was issued last week for a popular alcoholic beverage stocked in Dunnes and Tesco. The alert concerned a well-known alcoholic spirit retailing at €27 amid concerns it may contain glass fragments.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a “do not drink” warning for certain batches of Disaronno Originale 500 Years sold in limited-edition bottles. The recall was prompted after fears emerged that tiny glass fragments could be present inside the bottles.

Disaronno, promoted as ‘The World’s Favourite Italian Liqueur’, is a staple in many Irish households, particularly during the festive period.

It is readily available throughout Irish supermarkets and off-licences, including Tesco, where it retails for €27, and Dunnes Stores, where it is currently on sale for €25. Retailers were ordered to withdraw the affected batches from sale immediately and display recall notices at points of purchase.
