Laois hit with Status Yellow ice warning as country braces for Arctic blast

People in Laois will need to wrap up this weekend as the entire country has been issued a Status Yellow weather warning for low temperatures, ice, and even snow. 

Met Éireann has issued the Status Yellow warning for low temperatures and ice for the whole of Munster as well as Laois, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow.

This warning will be valid from 6pm on Saturday, 3 January until 11am the following morning on Sunday, 4 January. The impacted counties will see temperatures fall between -2 and -4 degrees with severe frost and icy stretches in some areas.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Louth and Connacht. These areas can expect to see wintry showers and snow accumulations. OFFICAL MET ÉIREANN FORECAST BELOW.

This warning will be in affect at the same time as the low temperature warning for the rest of the country. 

Met Éireann has warned that the freezing conditions may result in hazardous driving conditions across Laois and the rest of the country.

Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel has also warned that snow showers might even be seen after Met Éireann’s warnings end, with potential snowfall on Sunday evening in parts of Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster. 

National Forecast issued on January 2 at 1pm: 

Friday: Afternoon will be bright with sunny spells. Scattered showers also, mainly in Ulster and Connacht with some sleet or snow possible in Ulster. Cold with highest temperatures of just 2 to 6 degrees and mostly moderate northwesterly winds.

The night will be cold with frost and ice developing under largely clear skies. Scattered showers will continue, mainly for Ulster and Connacht with some falls of sleet and snow. Largely dry elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly winds, fresher for northern and northwestern coasts.

Saturday: Plenty of sunshine tomorrow with scattered wintry showers continuing for Ulster and Connacht while staying largely dry elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly breezes.

Long clear spells with wintry showers in the north and west over night. Staying mostly dry elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees in light westerly breezes. Some fog or freezing fog patches may form.

Sunday: Cold with frost and ice slow to clear. Good spells of sunshine will occur along with well scattered wintry for Ulster, Connacht and parts of west Munster while staying largely dry elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 or 6 degrees in light to moderate west to northwest breezes.

Very cold and mostly dry overnight, though well scattered wintry showers will continue in the north and west. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees in mostly light northwesterly winds.

Monday: Another cold day with frost and ice slow to clear, leaving a predominantly dry day with plenty of sunshine and with just isolated wintry showers for the north and northwest. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees in mostly light northwest to west breezes.

Very cold again early in the night with just a few showers, mainly in the northwest. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees with light westerly winds. It will turn less cold then as cloud builds from the west through the night with winds backing southerly and strengthening for Atlantic coasts by morning as outbreaks of rain move into the west and southwest.

Tuesday: Outbreaks of rain will track southeastwards across the country through the day though there will be dry intervals too. Highest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees with moderate to fresh southerly winds developing for a time.

Further Outlook: Some uncertainty in the outlook but indications are for more unsettled conditions through the rest of the week.
