Residents living along one of the worst roads for speeding in Leicestershire claim motorists treat their road “like it’s a racetrack”.
More than 4,500 speeding notices have been issued along Leicester’s Narborough Road in the last 11 months. Those figures were revealed in latest data from Leicestershire Police which covered the roads on which drivers sped the most between January and November 2025.
The most notices were issued on the A6 St Margarets Way/ Ravensbridge Drive, with 9,149 drivers caught speeding on the road near Abbey Park. However, due to the lack of residential houses in the area, we visited the camera which issued the second most notices.
That belonged to Narborough Road, with a camera placed on its connection with Fullhurst Avenue, near Rowley Fields. Data showed 4,588 notices were issued in the last 11 months on the road, with the highest speed on the 30-40mph road recorded at 84mph.

Residents living near the speed camera have complained that motorists speed down Narborough Road and treat it like a “racetrack”. Helene and her husband told LeicestershireLive: “Its treated like a race track, especially late at night.
“We often see people speeding down here, not so much in the day because the traffic stops people from speeding down the road but at night I would not cross this road. Its too dangerous, which is why it doesn’t not surprise that this is one of the worst roads in Leicester.”
The couple, who have lived in the area for more than eight years, were not the only ones who complained about speeding in the area. Local father Saheed Bello said: “When people see this camera you would think they slow down, I mean its clearly visible.”

“When I’m going to work or the shops and I’m on my way back, I always see this camera flashing. Its constantly working, which goes to show people keep speeding here.”
We informed Mr Bello that the highest speed recorded in the past year on the road was 84mph, to which he said: “They were going how fast? No, that is way too high, that is crazy.
“This is why I’m glad I’ve taught my kids how to cross the road safely and always wait for the green man at the crossing. People go way too fast down here.”
Another local father, David, who lives on Narborough Road, did not believe the road was safe for children, saying: “I would say that it is not safe at all around here, especially for my kids. They are both three years old so I’m glad they are not at the age where they would be going out by themselves around here.
“I will move when they get older, as I wouldn’t want my children crossing this road.”
Safety fears for David have been heightened by recent incidents in the area. He said: “The other day I was going to the shop over the road when a car flew by while being chased by the police. Its just not safe around here. Every week something else happens.”
Other residents such as Leo Daniels said the reason behind the excessive speeding could be people failing to realise there is a 40mph speed limit in place in the stretch of road. He said: “I’ve seen this camera pick up a lot of motorists because I believe most of them do not realise this is a 40mph zone.
“Drivers tend to think you can go faster than that here but that is not the case. There is a 40mph marker on the road right there, so its not like its hidden.”
Mr Daniels then pointed to a tree which has been planted along Narborough Road in memory of biker who died in a traffic collision. His neighbour Natasha said that was not the only fatality which has taken place because of dangerous driving and speeding in the area.

Natasha said: “Thing is that we have had a couple of fatalities on the road because of speeding and dangerous driving which is not good at all. You also tend to see kids pulling wheelies on this stretch of road which is an accident waiting to happen.”
It was as Natasha was being interviewed during the afternoon rush hour that two children were seen carrying out wheelies with their electric bikes along Narborough Road.
While the issues have many concerned, some residents did not back introducing stricter deterrents along the road. Mr Daniels said: “Regardless of people speeding though, I would not be in favour of any speed restrictions such as speed bumps or chicane on the road, I don’t think that would be necessary here.
“Personally, I think the speeding on this road has always been the same, neither worse or improved. Its just that since the council put the camera on the junction, its highlighted more. Do not get me wrong though, people around here could do with learning how to drive safer, that is for sure.”
