As the cost of living crisis persists in the UK, many individuals have observed a gradual increase in prices during their weekly supermarket shop. However, one woman has revealed that some supermarket items have become so costly that she’s simply stopped purchasing them.
Charlotte Deering, who goes by @themoneyferret on Instagram, frequently shares advice on how to ‘live well for less’ with her 126,000 followers. Yet, in a recent reel, the frugal-living enthusiast expressed her astonishment at the significant price hike of certain items in supermarkets. The video begins with Charlotte strolling through Tesco, with overlay text reading: “A food or drink item you’ve stopped buying because the price kept going up…”
The camera then zooms in on a jar of Kenco coffee, priced at £8.35, prompting Charlotte to ask: “Sorry, but when did Kenco coffee cost £8.35?
“I remember buying this when it was like £3-something and I thought it was expensive then. It’s just complete madness.” She also highlighted that a refill for the coffee was priced at £5.25.
She demonstrated a similar scenario with Nescafe coffee, with a jar of the original blend costing £7.25. Tesco had even added a label proudly stating that the coffee was ‘price matched to Aldi too’, a supermarket renowned for its low prices.
Charlotte expressed her dismay, stating: “Every time I’m going to the supermarket, I’m getting more and more shocked by the prices…£7.25 for Nescafe coffee and £5.35 for a refill. What in the world is going on here?

She was also taken aback by other items, including Tesco’s own Extra Virgin Olive Oil, priced at £5.55 for a smaller bottle and £7 for a larger one. “I mean no way I was paying that,” she declared.
In the condiments section, she was surprised to find Heinz Tomato Ketchup priced at £3.65. She reiterated: “No way was I paying that. “
Her sentiments were echoed when she saw the price of Hellmann’s Light Mayo, which was £3.75 for a jar. “I’ve actually seen this going for upwards of £5,” she noted.
In the same aisle, Charlotte was taken aback by the cost of Bisto gravy. She remarked: “I do love Bisto gravy, but would I pay £3.95 for 300g of it?Absolutely not.”
However, the most shocking price for her was Kellogg’s cereal, which was being sold for £4.25. She also confessed she was ‘glad she didn’t look at the mince’, as she’d heard that beef mince is now retailing in the store for £7.19 for 750g.
The influencer concluded by saying: “I honestly dread going food shopping now, but let me know what you think. “In her caption, she added: “All I do when I go round the supermarkets now is go, ‘How much?’, or, ‘I’m not paying that’, it’s ridiculous!”
The post struck a chord with fellow shoppers, garnering thousands of likes. One individual commented: “You sound like me, don’t get me started.
“My husband likes the nice olive oil, Lurpack, nice eggs etc, can easily spend like £25 on those three things!”
Another shopper remarked: “Beef mince used to be our go-to meat but it’s gotten so expensive that it’s not an option most weeks.”
A third person added: “I work in a supermarket and it breaks my heart to see these prices go up every week. “
One savvy shopper shared their money-saving tip, saying: “When we go to Spain to see family, we bring back bottles of olive oil rather than wine now.”
Others mentioned they’ve switched to supermarket’s own-brand products to cut costs. One person noted: “I buy Tesco version of ketchup and mayo, Tesco finest gravy (or M&S gravy) and I also try the Tesco own stuffing. “
Another chimed in: “M&S ketchup £1 is excellent.”
Tesco has been approached for a response.
