Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been charged with drugs and weapons offences, US Attorney General Pam Bondi has said.

Maduro, she says, has been charged with “Narco-Terrorism Conspiracy, Cocaine Importation Conspiracy, Possession of Machineguns and Destructive Devices, and Conspiracy to Possess Machineguns and Destructive Devices against the United States”.

After strikes on the country’s capital of Caracas early on Saturday, US President Donald Trump said Maduro and his wife had been “captured” and flown out of the country”.

Venezuela has declared a national emergency, denouncing “extremely serious military aggression” by the United States.
