Uttarakhand: Woman Trapped Under Debris, Man Missing After Chamoli Cloudburst | India News

 A woman has been trapped under the debris of her house, while a man has gone missing after a cloudburst struck Chamoli district’s Tharali tehsil, officials said.

The incident took place late Friday night, with heavy debris sweeping into several homes, including the residence of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said there has been significant property damage due to the cloudburst and added that the administration, along with rescue teams, is at the site carrying out clearance and relief operations.

“Last night, there was a cloud burst incident in Tharali, causing widespread damage to Tharali and the surrounding areas. A woman has been trapped in the debris of her house, and a man has gone missing. There has been a huge loss of property. Administration and other teams are at the spot, and clearance and rescue work is underway,” ANI quoted Tiwari as saying.

CM Dhami Reacts 

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that he is keeping a close watch on the situation after the cloudburst in Tharali area of ​​Chamoli.

Chief Minister Dhami said that the district administration, SDRF and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue work.

Chief Minister Dhami further said that he is in constant touch with the local authorities and is praying for the safety of all the affected people.

“Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. The district administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. In this regard, I am in constant contact with the local administration and am personally closely monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone’s safety,” CM Dhami said in a post on X.

IMD Alert For Heavy Rainfall 


Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department on Friday issued an orange alert from 2:05 PM on August 22 to 2:05 PM on August 23, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and very heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

According to the Meteorological Department, “In the next 24 hours (Orange Alert from 22.8.2025, 2:05 PM to 23.8.2025, 2:05 PM) there is a possibility of thunderstorms/lightning and very intense rain at different places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Nainital, Almora and Udham Singh Nagar such as Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Gangotri, Kashipur, Kedarnath, Joshimath, Mussoorie, Munsyari, Lohaghat, Ranikhet, Khatima and adjoining areas”.

An orange alert is issued when heavy rainfall is anticipated, typically exceeding 115.6 mm and up to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
