For their hard work and exceptional performance in the 2024 National Examination Council’s (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination, the Learn Africa Education Development Foundation yesterday rewarded top three students with a cash gift of N2.25m.
Adeyemo Emmanuella Adedamola of Our God Reigns Crystal School, Ota, emerged overall best with nine A’s and was awarded a sum of N1m. Nwachukwu Victor Ikechukwu of Saint Paul’s Academy, Jos, emerged the first runner-up and got a cash prize of N750,000, while Watt Victory Oluwaseun, of Crescent International High School, Ota, who was the second runner-up, got N500,000.
Speaking at this year’s NECO Excellence Awards, the Chairman, Learn Africa Plc, Chief Emeke Iwerebon, said the initiative, which falls under the firm’s corporate social responsibility, is based on its belief that excellence should not only be nurtured, but also celebrated and rewarded.
Iwerebon noted that since its inception, the award has provided a platform to recognise outstanding academic performance and inspire countless students to strive for the highest standards in their educational journey.
“Their achievements not only highlight their intelligence and dedication, but also reflect the commitment of their teachers, the support of their families, and the enabling environment provided by their schools,” Iwerebon stated.
While commending the awardees for emerging tops, Iwerebon added: “This moment is yours. You have earned it through late nights of study, perseverance in the face of challenges, and a steadfast focus on your goals. Your success today is proof that determination and discipline yield remarkable results.” He, however, reminded them that the success being celebrated is not the end of their journey, but the beginning.
“You have set yourselves apart as leaders of tomorrow, and the responsibility that comes with such distinction is great,” Iwerebon added. He reminded us that we live in a rapidly evolving world where knowledge, innovation, and adaptability are vital.
As they progress in their educational journey, Iwerebon enjoined the students to remain curious, seek knowledge continuously, and apply their talents not just for personal gain, but for the betterment of their communities and the country, adding, Nigeria needs your brilliance, creativity, and sense of purpose.
He commended parents and guardians for their support and sacrifice, saying their investment, encouragement, and belief in their potential have made all the difference.
While applauding teachers and school administrators for their contributions, the company chief noted that they are the bedrock of the country’s education system.
“Through your dedication and passion, you light the path of learning for our children. Your role in shaping young minds cannot be overstated. It is said that the influence of a good teacher can never be erased, and today, we see the fruits of your labour,” Iwerebon added. He added that the cash gift is not just a reward, but a symbol of encouragement and belief in their future.
“We hope it will spur them on to even greater achievements and serve as a reminder that excellence is always recognised and valued.” While reminding that education is a collective responsibility, Iwerebon called on governments at all levels, corporate organisations, educators, parents, and communities, to work together and create opportunities for children to thrive.
An elated 17-year-old Adedamola, who is currently studying Pharmacy at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, said in the next five years, she hopes to be in her dream pharmaceutical company, producing safe and high-quality drugs.
“I also want to research new medications that can conquer cancer and other terminal diseases.” She advised those preparing for similar exams to put God first, study diligently and extensively, and set goals and work towards actualising it.
On his part, Acting Director, South-West NECO Zonal Directorate, Dr Benjamin Bargu, commended Learn Africa for the initiative, and enjoined others to emulate this by supporting the government in the task of uplifting the education sector.
