A Nottingham father-of-two, wielding a knife and baton, confronted a couple during a terrifying road rage incident in the city.
Keeran Rolls “reversed at speed” before getting out of his vehicle armed with what a judge called a “fearsome-looking knife” following an incident in Carlton Hill.
The 32-year-old, who spoke to Nottinghamshire Live earlier this year after he was attacked in Turkey, told the driver “you think you’re big with your girlfriend?” before getting back in and driving away.
At Nottingham Crown Court, he was told he could face a jail term of up to 18 months if he gets into any more trouble between now and then.
Deferring the sentence for six months, Recorder Balraj Bhatia KC said: “What you did was totally disproportionate to the circumstances.
“You drove at some speed, causing the victim, who was driving in the opposite direction, to pull over so you could have the right of way.
“His expression of frustration was to raise his arms, but your reaction was to reverse your vehicle some distance, get out of the car and confront him.
“You have an extendable baton in one hand and a fearsome-looking knife in the other, and you confronted him in an abusive and aggressive manner.
“It is no surprise he and his passenger were traumatised by this incident.
“What has significantly impressed me, however, is what you have been doing to address your issues in terms of voluntarily making yourself a resident in a rehabilitation centre where you have been since July.
“So I want to test your resolve.”
Eunice Gedzah, prosecuting, said the road rage incident took place in Carlton Hill on June 14, 2024.
She said the victim was driving away from town with his partner as a passenger when he spotted the defendant driving down the hill towards him “at speed”.
The prosecutor said the complainant pulled over to let him through the narrow gap and gesticulated with his arms in frustration before driving off.
Miss Gedzah said: “He got to the top of the hill and pulled over to give way to another vehicle and saw the defendant’s vehicle reversing towards him.
“The defendant got out of the car with an extendable baton in his right hand and carrying a knife in the other hand.
“He said to him ‘you think you’re big with your girlfriend?’ and started ranting and swearing.
“The victim said he felt ‘frozen with fear’ and the defendant then got back into his vehicle and drove away.
“He later said he felt traumatised by the incident and his girlfriend felt so traumatised she had to take two days off work.”
Miss Gedza said police pulled over the defendant’s vehicle four days later and found the knife inside it.
Rolls, formerly of Gedling and now of Dorothy Grove, Edwalton, pleaded guilty to affray and to threatening another person with a bladed article and has 15 previous convictions for 31 offences, including drink-driving, drug driving, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and battery.
Matt Smith, mitigating, said his client was struggling to cope with the loss of his daughter’s mother, who he said had “died in tragic circumstances”.
He said: “He accepts he behaved in an appalling way.
“These offences took place at a time when he was struggling with the bereavement.”
In May of this year, Rolls and his partner approached Nottinghamshire Live to tell how he was twice attacked in a hotel while on holiday in Turkey.
He alleged he was punched both in the toilets and in front of his young children, leaving him with gashes on his brow and head.
He will be back before the court on May 13, next year.
