A neighbour has described the moment a man was killed after being stabbed in the heart in an altercation involving two teenage boys, who she described as a “pack of animals”. She also saw him fall to the floor and the colour drain from his face, and told neighbours “He’s going, he’s going.”
Kamran Aman, 38, suffered a fatal stab wound to the left side of his chest shortly after midnight on June 30 in Barry, after an altercation involving two boys, aged 16 and 17.
A trial at Cardiff Crown Court was played footage of the incident, in which one of the boys could be heard shouting “n*****” after the victim had already suffered the fatal injury. For the biggest stories in Wales first, sign up to our daily newsletter here
The defendants, of Llantwit Major, have both pleaded guilty to manslaughter but deny murder. They cannot be named as they are both under 18 years old and a court order has been made preventing them from being identified.
On Monday, Mr Aman’s neighbour Karina Ferne gave evidence about the altercation that led to his death.
Ms Ferne said she was at home reading when she heard a fight going outside her house. She looked outside and could see people fighting in the street.
She believed it may have been her neighbour Mr Aman, but could not be sure at the time.
Upon being asked what she saw by prosecutor Owen Edwards KC, Ms Ferne said: “There was a boy in dark clothing, a boy in white clothing… The one in the dark clothing and the light clothing, basically they weren’t give up. They were on Kam and wouldn’t let him defend himself.
“(Mr Aman) didn’t know which way to go, at one point Kam tried running around the cars to get away from them… They were relentless, they weren’t giving up, one was going one way, one was going the other way, he didn’t know where to go.”
The witness added: “The one in black was more hands on, he was the one leading it and more the instigator. The other stood back and would get involved intermittently and Kam wouldn’t know which way to go because there was two of them.”
Mr Edwards said: “What was he doing?”
Ms Ferne said: “Punching, swinging at him, running at him, chasing him… Kam was trying to defend himself, putting his arm and leg up. He did hit out but it was in self-defence. He tried to run away but they wouldn’t let him go.
Mr Edwards said: “Could you hear anything being said?”
The witness said: “I did hear some racial slurs being said. P*** I heard a couple of times… It could only have directed towards Kam, he was the only one there who wasn’t white.”
Appearing via video link, Ms Ferne said she saw the boy in white clothing going back towards the house before returning with something in his hand which she could not make out.
When asked how Mr Aman appeared during the altercation, she said: “He didn’t look like the person I remembered, he was very distressed I would say.”
Ms Ferne broke into tears, and added: “He just couldn’t get away no matter how much he tried, it was like a pack of animals on him.
“I was watching the one walking towards us and the next thing, it’s all a bit of blur, I’m pushed forward into my next door neighbour and they’re all in my house…
“Kam was closest to the stairs, I can’t recall where the other two were placed. They were further up the hallway. I remember seeing (my daughter) at the top of the stairs and I shouted they needed to get out of the house…
“(Mr Aman) said something along the lines of ‘I think I’ve been stabbed’. I must have touched him and there was blood on my hands. I said I think you have, I tried to stop him but then he left the property…
“I remember him going down onto the floor and that’s when I recall going into the house, there was blood on me, to wash my hands…
“When I came out from the house with the towel, the first thing that hit me was the amount of blood on the floor. It had passed his whole body and there was a puddle by his feet. I was surprised about the amount of blood, from my hallway.
“I remember looking at him and all the colour was drained from him, I knew from that point he wasn’t going to make it. He was gasping silently, I said ‘He’s going, he’s going’ and his eyes were rolling back.”
The trial continues.
