Met Éireann has delivered their verdict on Ireland experiencing a white Christmas.

For the period spanning Monday, 22 December to Sunday, 28 December, the national weather service indicated that Atlantic low pressure signals will continue, though the pattern appears much less defined than in preceding weeks.

They suggested this could point to a transitional phase or shift in weather patterns during Christmas week.

Met.ie stated: “Precipitation is weakly signalled to be above average across the south and east, while near normal or drier than average conditions are signalled in the west and northwest. Mean temperatures are signalled to trend near to above normal.”

Regarding this week, however, Met Éireann outlined that conditions are anticipated to be variable, becoming milder with rain and showers intermittently, though dry spells are also expected, reports RSVP Live.

Here is your weather forecast for the week ahead:

Thursday, 4 December

Any lingering rain in the northeast will gradually clear tomorrow morning, making way for sunny spells and scattered showers across the western half of the country. Some of these showers could be heavy, with a chance of hail and isolated thunderstorms.

More widespread showers or longer periods of rain will move in from the west during the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures will range from 6 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Thursday night will see showers or extended periods of rain, primarily in the north. It will become mostly dry for a while before rain sweeps in from the south and west by morning.

Expect the lowest temperatures to range between 1 to 6 degrees, with the coolest conditions in the north and east. Southerly winds will gradually increase to moderate to fresh levels throughout the night.

Friday, 5 December

The weather will turn wet and quite windy for a time as rain spreads northeastwards. Southeastern winds will strengthen, becoming strong and gusty with occasional gales on exposed coasts.

The afternoon and evening will bring scattered showers and some sunny intervals from the southwest as the winds ease to moderate to fresh southwesterly levels. Some of these showers could be heavy.

The highest afternoon temperatures will be 6 to 8 degrees over Ulster, and 8 to 12 degrees further south.

Friday night will be rather cloudy with scattered showers or longer spells of rain. The lowest temperatures will be between 5 to 9 degrees with predominantly moderate southwesterly winds, which will freshen in the southwest later.

Saturday, 6 December

The day will be breezy with scattered showers in the morning and only limited sunny spells. In the afternoon, the showers will ease with better spells of sunshine developing.

The highest temperatures will generally be between 9 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh southwest to west winds.

Sunday 7 December

The day will kick off on a damp note with bouts of rain and drizzle, which will clear towards the northeast before giving way to largely dry conditions and sunny intervals in the afternoon. Expect top temperatures ranging from 9 to 12 degrees, accompanied by moderate southeast winds shifting to the southwest.
