Need to know: Trump Agrees Two-Week Ceasefire in Iran Following Pakistani Intervention
Donald Trump stepped back from his threat to obliterate Iran last night, consenting to a fortnight’s ceasefire to give diplomatic negotiations a fighting chance. The suspension of airstrikes came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly appealed for additional time to pursue eleventh-hour talks. Trump had previously declared that unless Iran was prepared to “make a deal” and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the US would unleash “hell” upon Iran.Trump had intensified the pressure in the run-up to his 8pm ultimatum, cautioning that “a whole civilisation will die” should Tehran refuse the agreement. After the announcement, he insisted there was no doubt the US had secured a “total and complete victory”.The White House confirmed Israel had also signed up to the ceasefire with Iran, though Israeli officials have indicated they will press on with strikes in Lebanon, which they claim falls outside the ceasefire’s scope – contradicting statements from Pakistan and Iran, reports the Mirror.Iran subsequently confirmed that vessels would be permitted passage through the Strait of Hormuz under military supervision. Abbas Araghchi stated: “For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces.” Trump revealed that the US and Iran will hammer out an agreement within the coming fortnight, following Iran’s submission of a 10-point proposal. The plan calls for an end to regional hostilities and sanctions, alongside the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with a $2million levy per vessel.Keir Starmer has confirmed he’ll be travelling to the Gulf today. The UK Prime Minister stressed that Britain will “do all we can to support and sustain this ceasefire.” He continued: “I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached overnight, which will bring a moment of relief to the region and the world… Together with our partners we must do all we can to support and sustain this ceasefire, turn it into a lasting agreement and re-open the Strait of Hormuz.”Taking to Truth Social, Trump announced: “I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.” He maintained the US had “already met and exceeded all Military objectives” and was on the cusp of a “definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran”.The ceasefire hands Iran full authority over the strategically vital strait – control they lacked prior to the dispute. The fortnight window will enable Iran’s “10-point plan” to be thrashed out as diplomatic manoeuvres press on throughout the Middle East.Follow rsvp:
