The road back to the top of the 27-metre platform is rarely straightforward. For 2024 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series champion, Aidan Heslop, it became a journey measured not in medals, but in patience, resilience and belief.

Documentary ‘444 Days’ chronicles the period between his title-winning performance in Sydney, which he achieved while battling severe pain, and his first return to full-height diving more than a year later following back surgery that forced him to sit out the entire 2025 season.

After months of discomfort caused by a herniated disc, Heslop, from Plymouth, underwent surgery in Munich marking the start of a long and uncertain rehabilitation process. The 23-year-old acknowledged the reality of the challenge ahead at the time, knowing that recovery would be slow and that a return to high diving could never be fully guaranteed.

Divided into chapters, ‘444 Days’ traces Heslop’s journey from his early days as a fearless youngster – described by his parents as a natural-born cliff diver – to his rise through the ranks, including his World Series debut at just 16-year-old. At its emotional core lies the difficult decision to undergo surgery, despite the risk that his career might never resume at the same level.

The documentary captures the physical pain and mental strain that defined his final competitive season. Even at the height of his success, daily routines became a struggle, with nerve pain shooting through his leg and simple movements requiring rest and recovery. Yet, driven by a lifelong passion for the sport, Heslop persevered to win the 2024 title before stepping away to prioritise his long-term health.

However, recovery proved to be its own challenge. The film chronicles the months of rehabilitation, the incremental progress made in the pool and the gradual rebuilding of physical and mental confidence. From his first tentative dives from the poolside to his carefully managed training sessions, each milestone marked a step towards reclaiming the sport that defined his life.

A defining moment comes when Heslop returns to full-height diving during a training camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in early 2026. Exaclty 444 days after his last attempt, he climbs the 27-metre platform once again, confronting both physical impact and the psychological hurdle of returning to elite-level performance.

Now firmly on the path back, Heslop is setting his sights on returning to the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2026. Although the men’s field opened up during his absence in 2025, the youngest-ever champion’s focus has shifted beyond results alone, placing renewed emphasis on longevity, preparation, and long-term health.

Fittingly, 20 May 2026 will mark the start of the new Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series season – exactly one year after Heslop’s surgery began the journey back.
