A drugged-up man pulled out a kitchen knife and threatened to kill a paramedic who attempted to assist him after he had become unconscious. He told her: “I am going to kill you and cut you up.”

Jordan Wright, 28, was treated by a paramedic and an assistant after he was found lying unconscious in the street in Tonteg, near Pontypridd, on July 9. He was believed to be under the influence of drugs and an IV was implemented in order to administer naloxone.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday heard the defendant woke up suddenly and began swinging his arms while telling the paramedics: “Get away from me. Don’t f****** touch me.” For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter.

They tried to calm down Wright but his behaviour continued to be “violent, erratic, and unpredictable”.

He ripped off his oxygen mask and threw the paramedics’ equipment around before throwing a canister of oxygen at the floor causing it to leak flammable gas.

The defendant ripped the cannula from his arm, which caused him to bleed and spray blood all over the medical equipment.

He repeatedly shouted at paramedics: “You better give me back my f****** phone” as they tried to explain it was in his bag.

Wright went on to kick his coat and bag causing the contents to spill out onto the pavement.

He was asked if his cut could be bandaged but he responded: “No. Let me bleed.”

The paramedics feared for their safety as the defendant put his hand into his left trouser pocket and produced a kitchen knife with a blade between four and five inches long.

Prosecutor Harriet Ealden said Wright told bystanders “This knife is going in your f****** chest… Stay the f*** away from me.”

He then turned to the paramedic and a witness and said: “I am going to kill you and cut you up.”

Further attempts were made to calm down the defendant but he turned to a man and said: “I don’t like your face. Smug c***”” and attempted to throw a ceramic bowl at him.

Wright then began to sway and collapsed to the floor before losing consciousness a second time and he was placed in the recovery position.

Upon regaining consciousness he was offered a bandage by the paramedic and he responded: “No. No-one touches my body.”

An ambulance and the police arrived at the scene and the defendant was put into the back of the ambulance but he continued to act aggressively and erratically.

He kept attempting to get up and was saying incomprehensible things. He refused treatment and left the ambulance but he was arrested and taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

At the hospital he refused treatment and spat at a police officer causing him to be placed into a spit hood.

He was taken to custody and was found in possession of a bag of green vegetable matter, a bag of white powder, and a bag of white crystals.

The knife was later found in the front garden of a property near the incident.

When interviewed under caution the defendant claimed he recalled nothing of what had happened and said he had suffered a “mental health episode” having been hit to the head with a brick four days beforehand.

Wright, of Ty Heddlu, Treherbert, later pleaded guilty to affray, possession of cannabis, threatening a person with a blade, possession of a kitchen knife, and assaulting a constable.

The court heard he has seven previous convictions including offences of possessing a bladed article, possessing of cannabis, and a public order matter.

In mitigation Kevin Seal said his client has mental health difficulties and was of previous good character up until the Covid pandemic.

It was also said the defendant has a “growing problem with alcohol” and was using Valium at the time of the incident.

Sentencing, Judge Simon Mills said those present at the scene would have been “terrified” by the defendant’s behaviour.

Wright was sentenced to a total of 58 weeks imprisonment.
