The main focus tonight
Righto, so there are a few matches to focus on tonight. Shortly, Australia’s own Madison Inglis will walk onto Rod Laver Arena for a daunting assignment against world No.2 Iga Swiatek. We’ll be sharing our attention between that clash and Sinner’s fourth-round battle against his countryman.
Here are Monday’s match details:

Sinner claims the opening set 6-1
That was blistering tennis from the two-time defending champ. Sinner surged through the opening set 6-1 in just 27 minutes. It’s an even tougher assignment for Luciano Darderi now.

Sinner off to a flyer
In a matter of moments, Jannik Sinner has raced to a 5-0 lead. There’s two breaks of serve in that mix. Can Sinner do it again now and pick up a bagel set?

The weather situation
It’s by no means as hot today in Melbourne as it was on Saturday, but there’s still a bit of sting in the breeze. Not long after 6pm local time, it’s hovering around 30 degrees Celsius in old Melbourne town.
And here’s the current reading on the tournament’s heat stress scale. That’s pretty high when the air temperature doesn’t seem that severe.

Sinner leads 3-0
That was a clinical service game and Sinner consolidates his break. The match is racing along now. I’ll go out on a limb – Sinner to go through in straight sets and have an early night.

Break: Sinner with early ascendancy
Champion Italian Jannik Sinner secures the break at the earliest chance. Advantage the world No.2. The gap in class is already on show on MCA.

Sinner goes ahead early
That was a pretty lengthy service game for Jannik Sinner, but he edges ahead. Sinner saw off two break points, but found his groove and eased into the match nicely.

Good evening, folks
My name is Scott Spits, and I’m in the blogging chair for the evening. It’s bound to be a belter of a night. We’re kicking things off with all the focus on Jannik Sinner versus Luciano Darderi in an all-Italian affair on Margaret Court Arena.
Two-time defending champion Sinner has been relegated to Melbourne Park’s “No.1 court” due to the complexity of scheduling – Novak Djokovic was originally slated to play on Rod Laver Arena tonight but the 10-times champion picked up a walkover. That happened probably too late for organisers to switch Sinner onto the main arena because patrons were banking on watching the Italian on MCA.
World No.2 Sinner will serve in this fourth round clash.
