Tensions reached fever pitch on Silent Witness as BBC audiences tuned in for the final episode of series 29 last night (March 3). Fortunately for devotees of the crime drama, its continuation was confirmed this week.
The concluding two episodes, entitled Shame, followed Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and her colleagues as they worked to unravel the intricate murder of a woman whose remains were found in a river.
The body belonged to Mei Li, a British-Chinese pro-democracy campaigner who had a price on her head from the Hong Kong government. Mei was betrothed to security services operative Alex Burns, who confirmed her identity at the morgue.
When Nikki uncovers evidence indicating Mei was deceased before her apparent drowning, the investigation takes a surprising twist.

What happened to Mei Li?

BBC audiences learnt that the woman pulled from the river wasn’t Mei Li at the conclusion of episode nine, with the actual 23-year-old concealed in her parents’ restaurant.
She had been campaigning for the release of a billionaire political activist and businessman from prison, which Hong Kong authorities viewed as a threat, reports the Express.
When Kitt alerts the team that Hong Kong officials are offering HK$1 million for Mei’s capture, her parents urge her to flee for her own protection and go underground.

Whilst it was initially thought the recovered body was Mei Li, the team subsequently identified her as a woman named Na Chen.
She was a Chinese national studying at Harvard on a U.S. student visa, but her life took a turn when she had an affair with a professor and stole intellectual property.
Tragically, her theft led to her death and also resulted in Rodrigo being poisoned and killed.

In a shocking development, it was revealed that a woman named Linda was behind the murders of both Na Chen and Rodrigo.
Linda had connections to Helen, who Nikki had encountered following an incident in episode nine and later joined for drinks.
Whilst at a pub, Helen drugs Nikki and takes her to a warehouse where Linda is waiting.
It emerges that Helen and Nikki have been attempting to steal technology from the company all along. Kit then discovers that Helen previously worked for a British-American firm called Forgeon Systems, which transforms IT into the “weapons of tomorrow”.
Nikki’s life hangs in the balance when Linda demands more Bufotoxin from Helen, the same poison that killed Rodrigo, but Helen resists.
A scuffle ensues between the two women, but Jack arrives just in time to rescue Nikki as law enforcement descends on the scene.
Will Silent Witness return for another series?

Following the conclusion of series 29, the official Silent Witness Instagram account confirmed the show’s return for another series.
Their post read: “#SilentWitness will return next year for its 30th Series!”
However, it appears that production may have already commenced, as Bodenham Arboretum revealed the programme had been filming at their venue.
Posting a series of photographs featuring Emilia Fox, they said: “Staff couldn’t hide their delight when actress Emelia Fox, who plays pathologist Dr Nikki Alexander, popped into the Visitor Centre to say goodbye and happily obliged with a photocall.
“What a pleasure it has been! The new series will be screened in January next year…watch out for the local landmarks!”.
