Stratford-upon-Avon Recreation Ground, affectionately referred to as the Rec, is undergoing significant redevelopment.
This includes an impressive new play area designed for youngsters of varying ages and abilities.
Features include an extensive sand pit, paddling pool and water play zone, a designated area for toddlers and a substantial junior play space complete with a climbing tower ‘tree with a hideaway’ element.

Additionally, every element of the playground incorporates accessible features or sensory play opportunities.
Split into four distinct zones, there’s plenty for all ages and capabilities, reports Birmingham Live. The divisions are as follows:
Sand Play Area with a large sand pit complete with diggers, a climbing frame, slide and 3D wet-pour play animalsJunior Play Area with a rope space net for scrambling, a seesaw, swings for all ages, two spinners and a ‘hangout tree’ climbing tower with a slide and ‘hideaway’.Younger Play Area with two climbing frame and slides, one of which is the shape of a deer, and a puzzle stationWater Play Area with a paddling pool and water play stations
A sheltered seating area has also been provided for picnics and rest.

A spokesperson for Stratford-upon-Avon District Council said: “The wait is nearly over!”.
“We’ve been hard at work transforming the much‐loved Recreation Ground Play Area, Stratford-upon-Avon into an exciting new forest of adventure, filled with fresh challenges and a more inclusive, accessible design for everyone to enjoy.
“Alongside brand‐new play equipment, we’ve added more seating, shaded areas, and upgraded the sand pit and paddling pool to create an even better space for families.”
Parents have expressed their enthusiasm on social media. One person commented ‘we need to try this place!’, whilst another remarked ‘definitely for a summer’s day out’ and a third enthused ‘this looks amazing’.
Another parent was particularly impressed by the accessible facilities: “Look forward to travelling from Malvern for the day once ready looks amazing and plenty of stuff my daughter with cerebral palsy can do!”.
Meanwhile, one mum perfectly captured the excitement with ‘awwwwww man, wish I was little again!’.
When will Stratford’s new playground open?
The current playground shut its doors on January 12 to allow work to commence on upgrading the sandpit and paddling pool, alongside the introduction of numerous new attractions.
Whilst the official launch date remains under wraps, organisers are optimistic it will welcome visitors during the Easter break.
A spokesperson revealed: “Our installers have pushed through some truly awful weather, but we’re thrilled to confirm we’re still on track for an Easter opening.
“Keep an eye on our socials for the official opening date – we can’t wait to welcome you!”.
The paddling pool will operate daily between May 1 and September 30, conditions allowing.
What else is at Stratford’s Recreation Ground?
The Rec provides far more than simply the children’s play area.
Serving as the venue for the Shakespeare Marathon and Stratford River Festival, this expansive green space offers ample room for youngsters to play freely.
Additionally, as the location of Avon Bowling Club and a charming bandstand, it’s an idyllic spot for outdoor dining. The site features Stratford Minigolf, two football pitches, public toilets and outdoor gym equipment, including a seated chest press, cross country skier, seated leg press, arm pedal cycle, bicycle and pull down challenger.
How to get to Stratford-upon-Avon Recreation Ground.
The recreation ground is located close to the Stratford Sports Club. The address is Swans Nest Lane, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 7LS and there is a car park available.
The recreation ground is situated just over half a mile from the train station, roughly a 15-minute walk.
