Leicester City fans are calling for a “complete change” after enduring a “terrible” season, which has seen the club relegated to League One.

The Foxes needed a victory over play-off chasing Hull City to avoid a second consecutive relegation, one year after tumbling from the Premier League to the Championship after finishing 18th.

Unfortunately for Gary Rowett’s side, they could only draw 2-2 at home to the Tigers on Tuesday night (April 21). This confirmed the club’s relegation to the third tier of English football, just 10 years after the highs of winning the Premier League title.

Leicestershire Live spoke to fans on their way to the King Power Stadium before City’s game with Hull, and many expressed their disappointment with the club’s performance this season.

Roy Lavery, 66, said: “This season has been a disaster. The whole team seems rudderless.

“There seems to be no sense of direction either from the club or on the pitch.

“I think we need proper football people back in charge because our current so-called leaders have only supported failure and lack of spirit so far this season.

“The so-called refresh when we got relegated down (to the Championship last season) was non-existent. The same people are still here.”

Roy linked part of the team’s demise to the change in playing style that followed Enzo Maresca’s departure in 2024.

He said: “We moved so far away from Enzo when we brought in Steve Cooper; they both have completely different philosophies, and we thought it would work.

“Nobody knows what is happening. We need a complete and utter changeover, both in the club and the players.

“I’ve been following this club since 1968, so I’ve always got high hopes for the future because you have to.”

Another fan blamed the current club’s situation on the chairman, Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, but Malcolm Butler, 65, was quick to jump to his defence.

Malcolm said: “See, I don’t think our issue is the owner, I think he is a great bloke.

“We need to change the way we get people in and we need to stop paying stupid money.

“This is my 24th season, and I’ve only ever missed three games of ours. I always have high hopes for this team. I love it.

“But I haven’t felt like I’ve supported a successful club in years. We are an utter shambles.”

Steve Potter was another fan who linked the issues to the change in playing style since Maresca, who later went on to win the Club World Cup with Chelsea, left the Foxes.

He said: “Our season has been awful. In capital letters.

“I could be worse than that, but I’m trying to be polite. It has been terrible.

“When Enzo left and we took in a manager with a completely different style of play and allowed that manager to bring in players that do not fit in with our play style, that is what has led us down this road.”

The 35-year-old had some clear opinions on what needs to happen for Leicester to get back to winning ways.

He said: “The ownership need to have a good hard look at themselves because at the moment they are moving further and further away from the fan base.

“My hope is that when we go down, the club takes some accountability and it builds for the future.”

After the game, the club’s chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha said the responsibility for the club’s fall into League One “sits with me”.

Top apologised for the club’s demise and said the club will now take “necessary decisions”, without explaining what those might be.

The statement reads: “To our fans, relegation to League One is now confirmed. As chairman, that responsibility sits with me. There are no excuses.

“We have experienced the highest highs and now the lowest lows, and the pain is shared by all of us.

“I am truly sorry for the disappointment we have caused. I understand the strength of feeling among our supporters, and we do not take your support for granted, especially at moments like this.

“Our focus now is on what comes next. We will take the necessary decisions to move the club forward, working together to rebuild, improve, and restore the standards expected of Leicester City.

“Our objective is clear – to respond strongly and compete to move this club forward again.

“We will face this head-on. We will keep going. Together. Top.”
