More than £100,000 has been raised for an internet famous pug after he was placed into an induced coma following a series of devastating seizures.

Chilli, the Leeds pug made famous online by owners Ollie and Helena Cutts, and followed by more than 1.5 million people on social media is currently being treated at a specialist neurology hospital after emergency vets were unable to stop his seizures despite 15 hours of intensive treatment.

The fundraiser has now become the biggest GoFundMe campaign for an animal so far this year, with thousands of supporters donating to help cover spiralling veterinary costs.

The couple said Chilli had never previously suffered a seizure before suddenly collapsing and needing urgent emergency treatment.

In a heartbreaking statement shared on the fundraising page, they explained: “Chilli was rushed to the emergency vets after suddenly having a huge seizure. As far as we are aware, he had never had a seizure before.

“On the way to the vets, he continued to seize. Over the next several hours, he was in and out of sedation while the vets fought to get the seizures under control.”

Vets warned that Chilli’s internal temperature reached a dangerously high 41C during the ordeal. Although they managed to lower it, every attempt to wake him caused the seizures to return.

His owners said: “The vets made the decision to place Chilli into an induced coma to try to give his brain and body a chance to settle, and to allow the anti seizure medication time to work.

“Sadly, when they tried to wake him again, the medication had not stopped the seizures.”

Because Chilli could not safely remain sedated long term, vets advised the couple he urgently needed transferring to a specialist neurology hospital to give him the best chance of survival.

Since then, the pug has undergone emergency out of hours treatment, oxygen support, MRI scans, specialist neurological care, intensive monitoring, steroids and treatment for suspected brain inflammation.

His owners say the financial pressure has been overwhelming, despite having pet insurance in place.

They explained: “Chilli is insured, because we have always tried to do the responsible thing for our dogs. If his insurance claim is accepted, it will go towards the first emergency out of hours vet bill, but after that his insurance is maxed out.”

The couple also revealed this latest crisis comes after an incredibly difficult year caring for their six dogs, five of whom have required surgery.

They said: “Five of our six dogs have needed surgery, including Tonks, who had spinal surgery for IVDD only six months ago.”

Ollie and Helena also addressed criticism over fundraising despite Chilli’s online fame, saying social media income is often unpredictable.

They wrote: “Our income is also not as predictable as people might think. Social media income is irregular and mainly comes from brand deals, which we do not do constantly.”

The couple stressed they were not demanding donations, adding: “We are not saying anyone has to pay for Chilli. We would never want anyone to feel pressured.

“We are simply asking that if Chilli has made you, your friends, or your family smile over the years, and if you are able and willing to help, donating or sharing gives him a better chance.”

In a more positive update shared with supporters, the pair revealed Chilli has started responding to treatment.

“His temperature has now returned to normal levels. He is eating, brighter, much more alert, and he has not had any seizures,” they said.

The swelling in his paw and leg caused by infection has reduced significantly, while an ulcer affecting his eye is also beginning to heal.

Although Chilli is now able to stand, he still cannot walk properly without assistance and remains under close observation in intensive care.

Thanking supporters for the huge response to the fundraiser, Ollie and Helena added: “We love that little man so much. He is our family, and we know so many of you love him too.”
