Aviktas officially opened today, just in time for half term
AVIKTAS opening
As someone who actively avoids thrill seeking activities, the thought of hanging upside down 138 feet in the air was not something that appealed to me. Rides terrify me, watching videos of people sky diving makes me feel sick.
And one time, got to the top of the Tower of Power at Siam Park in Tenerife just to decide it wasn’t my bag.
So, when I was invited to be one of the first people to try Aviktas – an eye catching gyro swing that rotates in the air – it’s fair to say I wasn’t too excited.

However, after checking multiple times that I was definitely strapped in, I tried the snake-themed ride, and something suddenly became clear. I understood. This is what adrenaline junkies are chasing.
Aviktas officially launched today, May 21, and daredevils rushed to Blackpool to experience the much awaited amusement. Standing at 88 feet tall and reaching 138 feet at full swing, Aviktas is said to be the largest ride of its kind in the UK – nearly doubling the size of Maelstrom at Drayton Manor.

During the launch, the CEO of Pleasure Beach Resort, Amanda Thompson OBE, warned people to watch the £9m project in action before trying. As thrill seekers riding The Big One were heard screaming in the background, she said: “If you are slightly faint hearted about going on something this big and this mighty, my advice to you is watch it first.
“That’s all I can say because I am terrified watching this ride so if you want the biggest adrenaline rush of your life, this is what you’ll get on this ride.”
However, Sascha Czibulka, Executive, Vice President of Intamin, added: “My recommendation is don’t think about watching, get on it and you will experience and enjoy the fun of your lifetime, it looks much much scarier than it actually is.”

And trying the adrenaline-pumping ride, I agree with Sascha, whose company designed and built the swing. As the ride started moving, I found myself clutching the seat and hoping for time to pass very, very quickly.
However, as you get higher you are met with a complete adrenaline rush and breathtaking views of the seaside town. This was only when I was able to open my eyes, I might add.
At it’s full height, you are left dangling upside down before the swing surges, giving you a feeling of complete weightlessness. And then when its all over, people rush off to join the queue again – suggesting that this ride will soon be a UK fan favourite.
Leaving with slightly strained vocal chords and hair which had doubled in size, I suddenly understood what all these thrill seekers have been banging on about. However, I’d warn against eating too much before taking a spin, as throwing up might just dampen your dopamine rush.
