Numerous Britons treasure childhood recollections of summer visits to coastal resorts and now take their own youngsters to these cherished locations. Tourists are drawn to seaside destinations for their tranquil atmosphere, charming lanes, amusement arcades, classic offerings such as fish and chips, and of course, the beach.
There are several well-known seaside spots that attract holidaymakers, such as Brighton, Whitby, Blackpool, Margate and Bournemouth. Yet there are also lesser-known treasures that remain relatively undiscovered, including Matlock Bath. This Derbyshire destination holds the unusual accolade of being regarded as a coastal resort situated within the Peak District, despite its distance from any shoreline.
It contains all the classic features of a seaside destination – fish and chip establishments, amusement arcades, ice cream shops and the Heights of Abraham cable car – all positioned within a river valley instead of alongside the ocean.
A North East local, identified on social media as Gabs Life, posted footage on TikTok presenting Matlock Bath to her 233,000 followers.
In the footage, she commented: “If you’re looking for a gorgeous day out in the UK, Matlock Bath is definitely the place to go. This little town in England is centrally located and is a great mid-point for day trips or weekend getaways.”
The TikTok user characterised it as a “beautiful, picturesque seaside town that is not actually near the sea.” Gabs Life highlighted that Matlock Bath features “cute, little shops” and picturesque walks. Her video showed people strolling beside the River Derwent, noting that this is part of Lovers’ Walks, a series of riverside footpaths that meander upwards and across the clifftops.
The seaside town enthusiast went on: “It’s just a really charming, chill place to explore, grab some food and slow down for a little bit. Matlock Bath is a hidden gem that you didn’t know you needed.”
The TikTok video has garnered thousands of views and over 70 comments. Other users on the social media platform were captivated by the Derbyshire location’s charm.
One wrote: “Feels like being at the seaside there!!” Another added: “It’s nice and all shops and cafes [are] fair priced surprisingly.”
A third chimed in: “One of three of my favourite places for a day out from Manchester. Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton…All absolutely beautiful.”
Someone else remarked: “Very good there always.” Additional users shared their thoughts with remarks such as “how cute”, “I love it here”, “love Matlock Bath” and “next on my list.”
Another user provided guidance for visitors: “Tip for you all as parking is horrendous. Park in Matlock at the train station..catch a train into Matlock Bath. Cheap fare and much easier. Matlock born and bred.”
Matlock is a market town located adjacent to Matlock Bath and according to Trainline, tickets for this journey start at £1.40 when purchased in advance.
The rail operator indicates that there are usually 18 trains per day operating between Matlock and Matlock Bath. Industrial entrepreneur John Smedley transformed the market town into an elegant spa resort during the 19th century, utilising thermal springs for hydrotherapy treatments.
Matlock boasts Hall Leys Park, featuring its own boating lake, tennis courts, a skateboard park and a children’s play area.
The town centre of Matlock is packed with small, independent retailers, alongside numerous cafés, pubs and restaurants.
With its prime position, stunning scenery, and superb transport connections, Matlock serves as a popular base for exploring Derbyshire and the Peak District.
