Laois nursing responds to HIQA inspection report

Droimnin Nursing Home in Stradbally has issued a statement following a recent HIQA report which found non compliance in eight of nine categories.

The purpose-built nursing home, which can accommodate 70 adult residents, was the subject to an unannounced inspection while there were 69 residents at the facility on April 8, 2025.

The Health Information and Quality Authority(HIQA) Inspectors who visited the facility in April had to get a staff member to assist a resident at one point during the inspection. It was during this inspection the home was found non compliant in eight out of nine categories.

“While many residents complimented the staff as kind and caring individuals, concerns were raised about the availability of staff and the timeliness of support with their care needs,” the report noted.

“Inspectors reviewed unsolicited information received by the Chief Inspector. The information received pertained to concerns regarding the governance and management of the centre, the quality of care provided to residents including social care, the supervision of staff and the management of complaints. This information was found to be fully substantiated on this inspection,” the report noted.

The report found the nursing home non compliant in relation to Staffing, Complaints Procedure, Health Care,  Training and Staff Development, Record keeping, Governance and Management, Individual Assessment and Care Plan, Residents’ rights and it was substantially compliant in relation to Protection.

A spokesperson for Droimnin Nursing Home, said: “As a leading care home, our foremost commitment has always been to deliver the highest standards of care expected by our residents and their families. We were therefore disappointed that certain aspects of our administration let us down – particularly in light of our history of consistently positive reports. However, as noted in the HIQA inspection, these issues never compromised the quality of care we provide.”

The Leinster Express/Laois Live has looked back on the last five HIQA inspection reports at Droimnin Nursing Home. There were mixed results.

An inspection last November found the home to be compliant in all but one of 12 categories and substantially compliant in two areas. In May of 2024, the home was compliant in 21 of 22 categories. In September of 2023, an inspection found the home non compliant in eight of 19 categories and substantially compliant in eight more. Then in May of 2023, the home was none compliant in eight of 16 categories and substantially compliant in three. Finally, in January of 2023, the home was found to be non compliant in four of 16 categories and substantially compliant in four more.

Following the April inspection, the nursing home stated that:  “Our own internal audit, conducted prior to the inspection, had already identified a dip in some administrative procedures. We were actively addressing these at the time, and this was fully acknowledged in the latest inspection. The areas of non-compliance were specifically linked to the onboarding and training of new staff members – an issue which has since been fully resolved.”
