A rail worker hailed as a “hero” remains in a life-threatening condition following a knife attack on a train near Huntingdon, British Transport Police (BTP) have confirmed. The staff member, who has not been named, was one of 10 people taken to hospital after the mass stabbing on Saturday’s 6.25pm train service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross.

BTP declared a major incident when the train came to a stop in Huntingdon after passengers pulled the emergency alarms. The LNER staff member is the only person still fighting for their life, BTP said, as they confirmed five of the people taken to hospital on Saturday night had been discharged.

A 32-year-old man from Peterborough, who boarded the train at Peterborough station, has been arrested and is being treated as the only suspect. Another man, a 35-year-old from London, who was previously detained, has been released with no further action, after detectives established he was not involved in the incident.

Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy said the investigation into the incident is progressing rapidly, with officers confident they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack. Police further confirmed that a knife was recovered at the scene and that the investigation remains ongoing.

The attack, which took place on 1 November, prompted a large emergency response at Huntingdon station, with the area cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams carried out detailed searches.

The full statement from DCC Cundy, reads: “Our investigation is moving at pace and we are confident we are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

“As would be expected, specialist detectives are looking into the background of the suspect we have in custody and the events that led up to the attack.

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the brave member of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist officers.

“Having viewed the CCTV from the train, the actions of the member of rail staff were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people’s lives.

“My thanks to the public for their patience while we continue our investigation at Huntingdon station. We hope that we will be able to support GTR in reopening the station soon.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales have said their thoughts are with all those affected by the Huntingdon attack.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson told reporters: “I spoke to the Prince of Wales this morning and he also asked me to express his and the Princess of Wales’ thoughts for the families and friends of all those impacted by the horrific events last night near Huntingdon.

“He also wishes for me to express his thoughts are also with the first responders and train staff that acted so swiftly.”

Police continue to appeal for witnesses and are asking anyone with information to contact them by texting 61016 and quoting reference 663 of 01/11/25.
