Everything we know after a Glasgow hotel burst into flames

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent seven fire engines and two high-reach appliances to Virginia Street when the alarm was raised at 6.20pm yesterday.

Crews were met with a “well-developed” blaze on the fourth floor of a four-storey building housing the Revolver hotel.

The House of Gods hotel, which is in an adjoining building, and a nearby Homeless Shelter Scotland were both evacuated as emergency services dealt with the incident.

On Sunday morning, the SFRS said the incident had now been “scaled back” but that two fire engines remained at the scene, with crews now checking the building for any remaining fires.

Glasgow City Council closed Glassford Street between Ingram Street and Trongate.

The busy road reopened shortly after 7am this morning, having been closed following the incident.

But the pedestrian footpath below the affected buildings remains taped off by cops.

There were no reports of any casualties.

The Glasgow Times understands that police remain at the scene but are not treating the blaze as wilful at this time.

Glasgow Labour MP Paul Sweeney posted on Saturday on X: “Awful to see a fire break out in the roof of the Revolver Hotel and Polo Lounge.

“I hope no-one is hurt and the fire can be contained.

“The old Scottish Legal Life Building by Alexander Skirving dates from 1889 and is one of Glasgow’s earliest red sandstone commercial buildings.”

He later praised the work of firefighters, saying: “Heroic work by these firefighters who have successfully contained a blaze that looked like it was on the brink of consuming one of Glasgow’s finest Victorian commercial buildings. Thank you!”

In a post on social media, it said: “Everyone is safe. Emergency services attended.

“For safety reasons, the soup kitchen is now closed until further notice while the situation is assessed.”

Polo Lounge, which shares a building with the hotel, has released an update.

They said: “As you will be aware our neighbours at Revolver unfortunately had a fire on their roof early evening Saturday, meaning us and our neighbours had to evacuate and close the buildings to keep everyone safe.

“Thankfully, we don’t believe our lovely venues have sustained much damage, but we will, of course, have to get our sleeves rolled up for a clean-up before we can open the doors again to you all.

“Rest assured, we will be open for Hogmanay, and we can’t wait to see you for the biggest night of the year. We will keep you updated.

“If you were headed to Polo, Delmonica’s or Riding Rooms today or tonight- our friends at Speakeasy will be opening at noon and will host Bella and the rest of the crew into the small hours, so we will see you all on John St!”

A spokesperson for Revolver Hotel said: “Revolver Glasgow can confirm that a fire occurred on the rooftop of the building earlier today.

“Emergency services attended promptly, and the situation was brought under control.

“We are pleased to confirm that all guests and staff were safely evacuated and that there have been no reported injuries.

“The safety and well-being of everyone on site remains our absolute priority.

We are working closely with the emergency services and relevant authorities as assessments continue. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.

“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the teams at Mercure and Social Hub for their swift support in assisting with alternative accommodation for our guests during this time.

“We also thank our staff, guests, and the emergency services for their cooperation, professionalism, and calm response.”
