England have settled on a hotel outside Kansas City that describes itself as an “English cottage” as their base for the World Cup. The Three Lions head to the tournament this summer among the favourites and have opted for a central location as part of their plans for success.
Despite playing their group stage matches in Dallas, New York and Boston, Thomas Tuchel’s squad will be based in the Midwest. They have opted to base themselves in Kansas City for its central location in America, perhaps with an eye on the knockout stages.
The Daily Mail reports that the squad will be staying at The Inn at Meadowbrook, a four-star boutique hotel in Overland Park, a suburb of the Missouri city. The 54-room hotel describes itself as being “intimate” and “thoughtful” and “nestled within parklands and paved trails”.
Rooms start at around £197 per night but go beyond £500 for the more deluxe options and is well rated, boasting 4.9 stars on TripAdvisor from 400 reviews. It is situated on the grounds of a former country club, looks out on lakes and has a 24-hour gym, a firepit, restaurant, swimming pool and a hot tub, but surprisingly not a golf course.

Several of England’s players are keen golfers and will have to venture off-site in order to indulge their hobby at nearby courses. They may bump into players from the Netherlands and Argentina at the courses, with both teams also staying in Kansas City during the tournament.
Unlike England, both the Dutch and Argentines have group stage matches in Kansas City, so therefore were granted higher priority for facilities by FIFA. Tuchel’s side appear to have booked out The Inn at Meadowbrook for the whole tournament, having opted to base themselves in one place, rather than move around.

The World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, making logistics and travel arrangements a challenge. England are understood to have consulted the players before deciding on their approach, having previously made mistakes for hotels during tournaments.
The infamous base of Baden-Baden for the 2006 World Cup, when paparazzi continually photographed wives and girlfriends in nightclubs, has become the situation the team most wants to avoid. But there is also an agreement that the opposite end of the spectrum, defined by Gareth Southgate’s isolated choice of Repino for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is best avoided too.

England appear to have tried to strike a balance with this choice, where they will be able to stay aware from the public glare somewhat in relative luxury, much like their choice of the Souq Al-Wakra hotel for the Qatar World Cup in 2022. Meanwhile, the Three Lions have requested to have use of the Swope Soccer Village as their training ground.
That is around a convenient 20-minute drive away, but is yet to be rubber-stamped by FIFA. The Swope Soccer Village is a £15million facility with nine pitches and a 2,000-seater mini-stadium that has previously played host to Manchester United, Manchester City, Stoke and Newcastle during pre-season trips to the US.
