Donegal Camino set €150,000 fundraising target for Cancer Care West

The countdown is on for the fifth annual Donegal Camino, which begins at Shrove Beach on Inishowen on Sunday, August 31.

This unique seven-day walking festival will weave across Donegal’s stunning hills, coastal routes, and loop walks, culminating at Sliabh Liag on Saturday, September 6.

Now a flagship fundraiser for the Cancer Care West Support Centre in Letterkenny, the Donegal Camino has seen remarkable growth in both reputation and popularity. As a result, limited spaces remain for registration on Day Two, the Urris Hills walk; Day Three, the Lifford to Oakfield Park, Raphoe walk; and Day Four, Sunrise on Errigal, which is weather dependent — with the Bridle Path at Glenveagh National Park as the alternative. All other days have now reached full capacity.

The Donegal Camino has raised a total of €279,295.30 over its first four years, supporting increased counselling and cancer-related services at the Cancer Care West Donegal Centre. This year, organisers have set an ambitious target of €150,000, which will go directly toward providing vital front-line services. The Centre relies entirely on private donations, receiving no government funding.

Chair of the Donegal Camino Committee and former Harvey’s Point owner Deirdre McGlone praised the creativity and dedication of this year’s participants and supporters. “We’re beyond proud of the growth of the brand, which profiles Donegal’s world-class walking and supports vital cancer services,” she said.

A standout moment this year came from long-time Camino guide Joe Coyle, who organised a poignant walk to highlight prostate cancer awareness. Walking 100km from Mountcharles to his birthplace in Downings, Joe and his supporters raised €17,500 and delivered a powerful message: “Lads, get your prostate checked.”

Walkers are encouraged to fundraise €100 per day walked, with many using the iDonate platform. Long-time participant Barbara McGinley continues to inspire others by hosting musical coffee mornings and growing her contributions year after year.

Donegal Camino also expressed deep gratitude to its longstanding business supporters, including Sendmode, Gallagher’s Bakehouse, Kelly Group, Simple Simon’s Fine Foods, 3D Personnel, Specsavers Donegal Town, and the Donegal Town Credit Union. New partners for 2025 include Donegal Tourism, Forward Emphasis, and The Tax Clinic.

A special Diaspora initiative will also be launched this year. Led by ambassador Noel Cunningham, “Donegal Camino Sunday” will engage Donegal people worldwide, building on a dedication from Donegal County Council to the opening day of the event. All funds raised will benefit Cancer Care West Donegal.

Founder Peggy Stringer, reflecting on the journey since the event’s beginnings in 2020 with five friends, said: “I’m very proud of all the Donegal Camino has achieved and the incredible support it’s generated for Cancer Care West Donegal, whose services are in high demand.”
