Car rental giant Enterprise Rent-A-Car is proposing to put £1 million into redeveloping a former petrol station at Plymouth’s Tavistock Road.
The company is making a second attempt at gaining planning consent from Plymouth City Council after an application last year was refused.
The site at 201 Tavistock Road has been operating as a hand car wash since 2007 under temporary planning consent.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car which operates in more than 9,500 locations across nearly 100 countries and already has two premises in Plymouth, says in planning documents that seven jobs will be created at the new location. Thirty five parking spaces are being proposed for 27 cars and seven vans.
Planning approval is being required to replace the existing buildings and structures with a two-storey building which planning agents say will “dramatically improve the site’s contribution to the A386 street scene” and hide car parking and rental vehicle storage.
This area is part of Glacis Park which has been earmarked for mixed use and forms part of the Derriford and Northern Corridor Growth Area.
Planners felt last year that the proposed development was piecemeal and not supported by a strategic masterplan.
They said it would be prejudicial to the future delivery of major development in that area which would be a “key gateway to the city marked by significant quality buildings”.
