There is no better feeling than settling down to binge a Lisa McGee show, and if Derry Girls is anything to go by, viewers are in for an absolute treat. Here is everything you need to know about Netflix’s How to Get to Heaven From Belfast, and its cast.
The show focuses on three best friends, now in their late 30s, who receive an email informing them that the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang has died. A series of eerie events at her wake sets them on a dark, dangerous, and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth about their past.Fans have long been awaiting a new project from the brilliant Lisa McGee to fill the Derry Girls-shaped void left in our hearts, and the 45-year-old screenwriter from Northern Ireland worked hard to reunite the whole creative team for her new show. When speaking about How to Get to Heaven From Belfast, she said, “This is the show I’ve always wanted to make; a mash‑up of my two favourite genres, mystery and comedy. We want to keep you guessing and keep you laughing. I can’t wait for you to meet Saoirse, Robyn and Dara, and go on this wild, weird adventure with them — an Irish odyssey — full of twists, turns, and arguments about eyelash extensions.”Roisin Gallagher will be playing Saoirse, a clever but chaotic TV writer. The actress grew up in West Belfast and is probably best known for her roles in TV shows like The Dry and The Lovers, for which her performances were nominated for awards. The 38-year-old is also well-known for her on-stage performances and has even written a play called Natural Disaster, which she wrote to process her grief over the loss of her father.Roisin is married to Craig Hutchison, a Scottish electrician she met while performing in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Edinburgh. They have been together for over a decade and share two sons.Robyn will be played by Sinéad Keenan and is described as a stressed-out yet glamorous mother-of-three. In her regular life, Sinéad is a mother of two alongside her husband, Chris McGill – that is, when she isn’t playing iconic characters. The 48-year-old was born in Dublin and dreamt of becoming a lawyer when she was younger, before realising her passion lay in acting. She played the girlfriend of Cillian Murphy’s character in the film Sunburn, which was her first role. After that, she went on to star in many beloved TV shows, such as Fair City, Doctor Who, Little Boy Blue, and Unforgotten. She also made a cameo in season three of Derry Girls!Caoilfhionn Dunne is the final member of the trio, playing Dara, a dependable character who always cares about her friends. Less is known about the actress, as she tends to keep away from the spotlight, but she is thought to be in her early forties and born in Dublin. Her first on-screen role was in RTE’s Little White Lie, and she later starred as Lizzie in the third season of Love/Hate, which earned her a nomination for best supporting actress in a television series at the 11th Irish Film & Television Awards. You might also recognise her from films like In View, Saint Maud, and A Thousand Blows, as well as from series such as Industry and Britannia. The cast also includes Jeanne Ní Áinle, Emmett J. Scanlan, Tom Basden, Ardal O’Hanlon, Michelle Fairley, and Josh Finan.Saoirse-Monica Jackson will also be making an appearance in the new show, much to the delight of fans. Most watchers will recognise the 32-year-old actress from her role as the fabulous Erin in Derry Girls, but she has also starred in shows like The Five and, most recently, The City Is Ours. She made headlines last year when she got married to her now-husband, Scottish DJ Hector Barbour, known professionally as Denis Sulta, in a Celtic-themed wedding. How to Get to Heaven From Belfast will be streaming on Netflix from February 12th, and all eight episodes will be released at once – perfect for binging!
