Emergency Information for American Citizens
Event: The U.S. Embassy alerts all U.S. citizens to strict wildfire prevention controls in place throughout Chile, including in national parks and wilderness areas. Controls in some regions include bans on lighting cigarettes, candles, campfires, and camp-stoves. Violations of fire controls result in arrests that can lead to substantial fines, extended periods of detention, deportation, and bans from re-entry to Chile. Always check directly with local or park authorities regarding fire controls and, when in doubt, assume that there are restrictions in place.
The U.S. Embassy further reminds all U.S. citizens that wildfires are extremely dangerous, fast moving, and destructive. U.S. citizens are advised to monitor local news and the website of Chile’s National Emergency Agency, SENAPRED, for the latest information regarding wildfires.
Actions to Take:
Follow all local regulations regarding campfires and cigarette use. Follow the guidance and orders of local officials. Monitor local media for information regarding wildfires. Avoid areas impacted by wildfires. Call 132 to report a fire or 131 for medical assistance. Review your personal security plans. Make evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance. Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
