House-hunters have been left bewildered by an unusual design feature in one of the bathrooms of a property near York on the market for £600,000. The Rightmove listing for the four-bedroom detached home in Skelton showcases a spacious living room and substantial separate kitchen/dining area, an extensive garden, and a standalone garden room.

The property also boasts three bathrooms, a garage, an electric vehicle charging point, and its own sauna room. However, it’s the styling of one particular bathroom that has left viewers stunned.

The photographs, which appear to show a smaller downstairs WC, reveal walls entirely covered in what resembles artificial grass, or AstroTurf. The peculiar decoration is further embellished with small yellow flowers scattered across the wall. The flooring is equally unconventional – painted in a deep blue shade, it displays an image of four fish swimming in the direction of the toilet, reports the Mirror.

Reddit users were mystified by the choice. One commented: “Astroturf a wall? Why why why.” Another quipped: “That’s the worst crazy golf hole I’ve ever seen.”

A third person responded: “It’s rare that someone digs out a property photo of something that I’ve really, truly never seen before. Lots of weird stuff, sure, but usually variations on a theme. Horrifying AstroTurf Bathroom is the first truly new and unique one of the year for me.”

Others questioned the practicality, with one commenting: “That is not a hygienic bathroom surface material.” Another user asked: “Did someone lose a bet? And HOW DO YOU CLEAN THIS?? Ewww.” Someone else queried: “Why why why, the rest of the house is so normal and nice?!”

However, some came to its defence. One remarked: “The downstairs loo reminds me of the Big Breakfast house or some other ‘wacky’ late 90s set dressing so I don’t hate it.”

Another admitted: “…….I don’t hate it.” A third observed: “I mean it’s one way to guarantee viewings, I mean who doesn’t want to see that in person?!”

The Rightmove listing describes the property, which appeared on the market earlier this month through York-based estate agents Ashton, as a “beautifully presented four-bedroom detached home” offering “offers the perfect balance of tranquil village living and exceptional convenience”.

The description continues: “Internally, the home has been finished to an exceptional standard, blending style, comfort, and practicality throughout. To the front elevation, a generous lounge provides a welcoming retreat, complete with a charming log-burner – perfect for cosy evenings.”

It adds: “To the rear, the property has been thoughtfully extended to create an impressive and expansive family room, ideal for modern living and entertaining. This stunning space flows seamlessly into a fully equipped kitchen, designed with both functionality and style in mind.

“The extended accommodation further benefits from a second kitchen, a separate utility room, and a luxurious downstairs sauna – creating a unique and versatile living arrangement. A distinctively designed ground floor WC adds a further touch of character to this remarkable home.”

The description continues with details of the upstairs bedrooms, one featuring a Japanese soaking bath, alongside the garden room, or workshop, situated at the back. It concludes: “This exceptional home combines generous living space, high-quality finishes, and a highly sought-after location. Offered for immediate viewing, this is a rare opportunity not to be missed.”

Whilst AstroTurf is commonly used as a generic term for all types of artificial grass, it is in fact the brand name of an American manufacturer specialising in artificial turf.
